The Moon passes through twenty-seven nakshatras, or lunar mansions, each 13°20′ wide. They are older than the signs in Vedic astronomy, and each has a presiding deity and a nature of its own.
Every nakshatra has four padas, or quarters. The Moon’s nakshatra and pada at birth set the Vimshottari dasha and give the traditional first syllable of a name — the naam akshar.
