From your first chart to Kundali Milan — fifty-one answers in plain words.
Kundali basics
What a Kundali is, why the minute of birth matters, and how KUNDALI draws yours.
Make your Kundali →1.1What is a Kundali?
A Kundali, or Janma Kundali, is a map of the sky at the minute and place you were born. It shows where the nine grahas stood among the twelve rashis, and which sign was rising in the east. Read together, they describe your nature, your gifts and the seasons of your life.
1.2Why does the birth time matter so much?
The rising sign, the lagna, moves on by one sign about every two hours, and every house of the chart is counted from it. A few minutes can move a degree; an hour can change the house a graha sits in. The Moon’s nakshatra also changes within a day, so the closer the time, the clearer the chart.
1.3What if I don’t know my birth time?
Tick “I don’t know my exact birth time”. KUNDALI then draws your Chandra chart, counted from the Moon, which holds true for the whole day, and sets the lagna aside. A family record, a hospital note or a parent’s memory of the hour can help you add the time later.
1.4North Indian or South Indian chart — which should I use?
Both show exactly the same sky. The North Indian chart keeps the houses fixed and moves the signs; the South Indian chart keeps the signs fixed and moves the houses. Use the one your family knows — you can switch on any chart, and the PDF follows your choice.
1.5Why does my chart differ from another website?
Usually the birth time, the birthplace or the ayanamsa differs. KUNDALI uses the Lahiri ayanamsa and applies the historic time zone and clocks of your birth day. Check that the place and the time zone shown on your chart match your birth.
1.6How is Vedic astrology different from Western astrology?
Western astrology measures the signs from the seasons; Jyotish measures them against the fixed stars. The two zodiacs are now about 24 degrees apart, so many people find their Vedic signs one sign earlier. Jyotish also reads the Moon’s nakshatra and the Vimshottari dasha, the timing of life’s chapters.
1.7What do I need to make my Kundali?
Your date of birth, the time as exactly as you know it, and the town or city where you were born. KUNDALI finds the place, its latitude, longitude and time zone, and shows them for you to confirm. It takes about two minutes.
1.8I was born outside India, or in a small town. Will it still work?
Yes. Births anywhere in the world, across the last hundred years, are drawn the same careful way. The place search covers towns and villages everywhere, and old time zones, war time and daylight-saving rules are applied for you.
1.9What is the ayanamsa, and which one does KUNDALI use?
The ayanamsa is the distance between the seasonal zodiac and the zodiac of the fixed stars. KUNDALI uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard adopted in India and used by most panchangs.
Reading your Kundali
Where to begin, and what the lagna, the Moon, the houses and the dashas tell you.
Open my Kundali →2.1Where do I begin reading my Kundali?
Begin with three things: your lagna (who you are and how you meet the world), your Moon sign and nakshatra (your mind and feelings), and the dasha you are in now (the chapter of life you are living). “Reading your Kundali” on your chart page explains all three in plain words.
2.2What is the lagna, the rising sign?
The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It becomes the first house, your self and body, and every other house is counted from it. In the North Indian chart it is the top centre diamond.
2.3What are my rashi and nakshatra?
In India your rashi usually means your Moon sign, the sign the Moon was in at birth. Your nakshatra is the Moon’s star, one of twenty-seven, with its own deity and gift. Together they describe your heart and mind, and they are used for names, Milan and daily guidance.
2.4What are the twelve bhavas, or houses?
Each bhava holds one part of life: the self, family and wealth, courage, home, children and learning, work and service, partnership, change, dharma, career, gains and the inner life. A graha in a house brings its nature to that part of life.
2.5What does the Navamsa chart show?
The Navamsa divides each sign into nine parts and shows the inner strength of each graha. It is read alongside the main chart, especially for marriage, partnership and the fruit of your efforts. A graha strong in both charts gives steady results.
2.6What is a dasha, and which one am I in?
The Vimshottari dasha divides life into periods ruled by the nine grahas, 120 years in all, starting from your birth nakshatra. Your chart page shows the mahadasha and antardasha you are in now, with their dates, so you can see which themes are in season.
2.7What are yogas?
A yoga is a special combination of grahas, houses or signs, such as Gajakesari (Moon and Guru together in strength) or the five Mahapurusha yogas. They show particular gifts. Learn → Yogas explains the main ones.
2.8What does “Your life right now” mean?
It reads five areas of life — career, money, health, marriage and family — from your running dasha and the present movement of Guru and Shani. Each area is marked Flourishing, Building or Steady, with a few positive lines and one simple practice for the season.
2.9Is anything in my chart “bad”?
No chart is bad. Every graha brings gifts, and harder placements are where patience and effort grow strongest. KUNDALI reads your chart with care and never in fear, and suggests simple practices that support you.
Milan & marriage
How two charts are read together, and how to understand the score with a calm heart.
Open Kundali Milan →3.1How does Gun Milan work?
Gun Milan compares the Moon signs and nakshatras of two people across eight kootas, worth 36 points in all. Each koota looks at one part of life together, from temperament to health. KUNDALI shows every koota with its points and a gentle explanation.
3.2What is a good Milan score?
Traditionally, more than half the points — 18 of 36 — is welcomed, and higher is warmer still. Points are a beginning, not a verdict: the full charts, the Manglik reading and the two people themselves matter just as much.
3.3What are the eight kootas?
Varna (1 point, outlook), Vashya (2, attraction), Tara (3, wellbeing), Yoni (4, nature), Graha Maitri (5, friendship of minds), Gana (6, temperament), Bhakoot (7, family and prosperity) and Nadi (8, health and vitality).
3.4What are Nadi and Bhakoot?
They carry the most points. Nadi (8) looks at the constitution and vitality the couple share; Bhakoot (7) looks at how the two Moon signs sit from each other, for family life and prosperity. When either gives no points, KUNDALI suggests a practice for you both.
3.5What does Manglik mean?
A chart is called Manglik when Mangala sits in certain houses, bringing energy and drive to partnership. KUNDALI checks both charts from the lagna and the Moon. When both partners are Manglik, the energies balance each other, and many placements soften it.
3.6Can a lower score still be a good match?
Yes. Many happy couples have modest scores. The kootas where points are fewer show where you two grow together, and the full charts, the Navamsa and your shared values tell a much larger story.
3.7Does it matter who is the bride and who is the groom?
A few kootas are counted from one partner to the other, so the order matters. Tell KUNDALI whether you are the bride or the groom on the Milan page; you can change it any time in My account.
3.8Do I need my partner’s permission to add their chart?
Yes. Birth details are personal, so KUNDALI asks you to confirm that your partner agrees before their chart is saved. Their chart is visible only to you.
3.9What is the practice suggested for couples?
Below your Milan reading, KUNDALI suggests one shared practice chosen from your kootas — such as an evening lamp lit together for Uma-Maheshwara, or a Friday prayer to Lakshmi-Narayana — with the day and time to do it.
Panchang & tools
Today’s Panchang, Rahu Kaal, the Rashifal, your numbers and your name syllables.
See today’s Panchang ↗4.1What is in today’s Panchang?
The tithi and paksha, the nakshatra, the yoga and the month, with sunrise, sunset and Rahu Kaal for your city. The full month and festivals are on panchang.ca.
4.2What is Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal is one-eighth of the daylight hours, ruled by Rahu, at a different time each weekday. Many families prefer not to begin new work, journeys or ceremonies during it. Its time depends on your local sunrise and sunset.
4.3Why do the Panchang times change with my city?
Sunrise, sunset and Rahu Kaal are local, and the tithi and nakshatra are read at your sunrise. So Toronto and Delhi can show different times, and sometimes a different tithi, on the same date.
4.4What is Aaj ka Rashifal based on?
Today’s Moon. The page shows which sign the Moon is passing through, counts its house from each Moon sign, and gives a short positive reading, three things the day is good for and a mantra. If you are signed in, your own rashi opens first.
4.5How does Anka Jyotisha find my three numbers?
Your Moolank comes from the day you were born, your Bhagyank from the whole date, and your Naamank from the letters of your name by their old values. Each number from 1 to 9 belongs to a graha. Everything is worked out on the page; nothing is sent or saved.
4.6What is Naam Akshar?
Naam Akshar are the name syllables that belong to your Moon’s nakshatra and its quarter, the pada. Families use them when choosing a name for a child. You will find yours on your Kundali page.
4.7Where do I find Shubh Muhurat and the Hindu calendar?
On panchang.ca, our companion site for the Panchang: good times for new beginnings, the full month, festivals and vrats. The links in the Tools and Panchang menus open it.
4.8Where can I learn how to do a puja or keep a vrat?
Ritual Guides, linked in the Tools menu, explain pujas, vrats and how to begin, step by step.
